The Mighty Eighth and Masters of the Air

March 18, 2017

Executive Producers Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks have been busy working on their new World War II miniseries for HBO - and it's going to be amazing. According to internet sources recently, the miniseries is gearing up to air sometime soon, and apparently the name has been changed to "The Mighty Eighth" (originally slated as "Masters of the Air", based on the book of the same title by Donald Miller). But wait a minute - there is also talk of release of a feature-film by the same name - The Mighty Eighth! Will they be coming out at the same time? Who is involved in the movie? It appears only time will tell. But either way, Aviation-Buffs and those of us interested in World War II are in for some epic arial battle scenes soon. And it's about time we honor our Heroes from the "air war" - they often do not get the credit they deserve.

Let me put it this way: The average lifespan of a B-17 bomber in World War II was 11 missions. A tour of duty for Airmen was 25 missions (and towards the end of the war, increased to 30). So, if you ever had the chance to speak to an Airman from WWII, you spoke to a living Miracle. Statistically, if they survived the war, they were already dead twice over.
